The Magic Cafe Forums – The forgotten Henning Nelms

In Dodd Vicker’s belms with Jim Callahan on Magic Newswire, Jim mentioned that he was given a copy of Henning Nelms’ book “Magic and Showmanship” when he was young and the book still influences his presentations today. The tricks are pretty confusing and don’t really make sense but the theory is just right.

I even picked it up because it was recommended as such. I’ve benefited so much from that book, I’m grateful that she forced me to buy it. Great teaching, and extremely well written. Now days with msgic DVD generation you get much less theory.

I considered those books my first REAL books in magic. And his book is so inexpensive too – plus, it’s easy to find! Steve rated it really liked it Feb 07, snowmanship If you haven’t heard the term, to gloss means to scribble marginalia in the book you are reading to explain obscure passages, provide intermediate steps in an argument, cross-reference to other sources, etc.

Magic is going through changes and people want to see entertainers, not some guy who can do all this fancy moves. It is a dense read with a lot of theory that makes you think about magic in ways you never had.

I thought it might be more philosophical so I was dissappointed. The Henning Nelms book is great and I too am surprised that it had not yet been mentioned prior to that interview. I read and reread them more times than I can count.
