6101 Aluminum Bar

Type A material, last covered in the issue of this specification, is no longer available; therefore, requirements for cold-finished rectangular bar have been deleted.
Tensile properties of the specimens such as tensile and yield strengths and bending shall be determined by tension test and bending test, respectively. The AL alloy does respond to heat treatment which is accomplished by annealing and relatively low temperature aging.
ASTM B317 Grade 6101 T6
This is a high electrical conductivity aluminum alloy also possessing good mechanical strength properties. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore each system shall be used independently of the other.
Annealing is done at F for 3 hours at temperature, followed by controlled cooling asym a rate of 50 F per hour down to F, then air cool. Machinability by conventional means is good. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard. No data, although the alloy is considered forgeable. Distributors will offer small quantity buys while mills will generally only sell large quantities, b371 delivery times anywhere from 10 to 50 weeks depending on size and form required This material is stocked primarily in Bar Products by 7 distributors but is also available to a lesser extent in Tubular Products.
Filler rod of the same alloy should be used. Hot working generally is not required because the alloy has very good cold working characteristics. Either carbide or high speed tool astj tooling may be used.
